Elk, Deer and Leaping Ants on the Front

More winter along Montana's Rocky Mountain Front.

Elk on a ridge on the Game Range.

If you've read this blog before, you know that I am enamored over Montana's Rocky Mountain Front.  Its grasslands, its mountains and, most importantly, its wildlife.  Some refer to it as "America's Serengeti."  I hope you folks aren't tired of pictures of elk, deer and Sawtooth Mountain;  you have seen them here and here before.

When the temperature drops below zero, those grazers need to eat, and that means they will be moving (i.e. grazing).  My wife and I set the alarm clock, check the coffee, plug in the truck and charge off into the freezing tundra to spot those "usually" elusive wapiti.  We've gone several times this winter.  And, it is always incredible to watch the sun rise while the deer and elk paw through the snow.

When we got home, our antelope were grazing behind the house.  More spice for the life along the Front.

Pronghorn Antelope, "Leaping Ants," behind the house.
My wife has a few more photographs on her website, Frontfotos.com.

Sawtooth Mountain from our home.

I'm not sure how much blogging I will be doing the next few months.  (I know, I haven't done much for the last year!)  Although I haven't done much cowboying for several years, I signed on to calve cows this winter.  Looks like the weather has anticipated my return--its snowy, sub-zero and we have 850 cows, including 200 first calve heifers.  Will the fun ever stop?!

Seeing all those black cows in that white snow, just makes me a shiver! Nice pics of Montana. I think your area must be colder than mine, by the looks of it. Hope you can stay warm out on the range.
